You may have heard other vegans going absolutely crazy over this stuff they call nutritional yeast or nooch? This guide will explain what it is and what you do with it.
They add it as an ingredient in their food, sprinkle it on top of stuff, they even eat it with a spoon. They go nuts when they spill it on the floor (and that happens a lot), but what the hell is this ‘nooch’ stuff?
Let us explain!
‘Nooch’ is slang for Nutritional Yeast. The American slang for it is Hippy Dust, which we think is pretty cool. Nutritional Yeast comes in the form of golden flakes. It’s inactive yeast that is fortified with vitamin B and B12. It has a unique flavour that has been described as cheesy, nutty & creamy.
Vegans will use it when making a variety of different foods & non-dairy cheese. It can be sprinkled on top of meals to add a cheese flavour with many people sprinkle it on their hot food like chilli or beans on toast. It can also be sprinkled on chips or added into sauces.
The most popular brand to buy is Marigold Yeast Flakes (with added vitamin D) however, you can buy it from some health food stores in the UK and pay by weight.
It is popular amongst vegans, probably because they buy it for the nutritional content and have realised how versatile and scummy it really is. Many non-vegans have not heard of Nutritional Yeast, so for now the main market for this golden sprinkly magic are vegans. It’s our best-kept secret!
