Vegan baker wins Bronze in Great British Pie Awards 2018

Not only did vegan pies make it into the British Pie Awards 2018, but they actually won two Bronze medals.

Progress in the UK vegan movement continues, especially this year when a vegan pie maker, Lisa Buck, from Norfolk gets her tasty pastries into the British Pie Awards 2018. 

The Pie Awards are run each year by the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association and every entry is scored on a points system within that category, then from those points they award Gold, Silver and Bronze. Lisa’s Bronze-winning vegan pies were the Drunken Mushroom and Beet Wellington. 

You’ve got stars in your pies

Lisa’s pastries took the star studded path last week and featured on ITV’s This Morning, where they were showcasing some of the competition’s best pies.

One of Lisa’s charity pies ‘Let’s Get Ready to Crumble’ even made it onto the Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Chris Evans in the run up to the awards. Profits from this pie will go to fund the upkeep of Ant and Dec, two rescued cows who are living out their days in safety in East Anglia.

Lisa is a Vegan Food UK member and runs The Vegan Owl bakery in Norfolk which was started with an aim to build a branded range of ‘traditional food with a plant based twist’ to help fund the rescue of animals in need. But Lisa also thinks it’s crazy in this day and age that vegans are missing out on convenience food when out & about.

Lisa tells Vegan Food UK: “I think it’s ridiculous that I can’t walk into a service station, airport, train station or hospital cafe and pick up something to eat. You used to have to choose compassion over convenience. I’m about to change all that!”

The Vegan Owl’s full range of food includes: So-Sage roll, Beet Wellington, Corn-Niche Pasty, the Un-Beetable Pasty, Gardener’s Pie, Drunken Mushroom Pie and Let’s Get Ready to Crumble. She only uses eco-packaging and recipes are registered with the Vegan Society. 

Thankfully also some supermarkets are picking up on the need for vegans to be able to get baked goods, including Ocado that has just started selling vegan sweet & savoury croissants!
