Award winning chip shop in Gloucestershire has just expanded their menu to become more vegan friendly, and it’s going down a storm.
Simpson’s in Stroud, Gloucestershire, was named Britain’s Best Fish & Chip Shop last year and now they have decided to make their menu more vegan-friendly by adding vegan fish as an option.
Vegan fish sounds a bit like an oxymoron, but it’s been around for some time now and is very popular among vegans in the UK. The fish part is made out of tofu and simply wrapped in seaweed. Simpson’s then dips the wrapped tofu in batter and deep fries it in groundnut oil.
The dish is aptly named to-fish & chips and is sold at £6 a plate. Within the first 30 minutes of the dish being sold at Simpson’s, 50 portions were bought – so there is obviously some excitement around vegan food in Gloucestershire.
Other vegan friendly options on Simpson’s menu include Fralapenos (fried jalapenos), Mushy Pea Fritters and Vegan Patties (slices of potato layered with vegan cheese, battered then fried). Their curry sauce and gravy are also vegan.
Other places round the UK where you can get some very worthy vegan tofish and chips are:
- Matter Fastfoods, Bristol
- Shakey Shakey Fish Bar, Ramsgate
- The Veggie Chippy, Birmingham
- Black Cat, London
- The Loving Hut (on the Level), Brighton
- Cloth Ear, Belfast
- Mono, Glasgow
