Steamed Bao Buns with Hoisin Glazed Shiitake Mushrooms Recipe

Mark’s and Spencer, and Oriental Supermarkets now sell these amazing steamed buns pre-made, so all you have to do is fill them.

Steamed bao buns are used in a lot of Asian cuisine and are absolutely wonderful to eat as a starter or a main.

We believe this recipe is one of the best fillings for bao buns using glorious shiitake mushrooms and hoisin flavours to compliment the buns.

As with all our recipes, this is super easy to make! But the end result is like a work of art, trust us!

If you aren’t a mushroom fan then throw some of your favourite vegan meat alternatives in there, will be just as good.

Ingredients

  • One Packet of Marks & Spencer Bao Buns
  • Two Punnets of Shiitake Mushrooms (Approx 240g)
  • One Tbsp Hoisin Sauce
  • One and a Half Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • One and a Half Tbsp Maple Syrup
  • One Tsp Chinese Five Spice
  • Half Tbsp Seasame Seeds (Plus extra for sprinkling on top)
  • A handful of roughly chopped Coriander (Plus extra for sprinkling on top)
  • One Carrott Sliced julienne
  • Six Radishes Thinly Sliced
  • One Tbsp of Oil for Frying
  • Two Red Chillis Chopped and De-Seeded (optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by cleaning the mushrooms, chopping off and discarding the stalk.
  2. Slice the mushrooms into strips.
  3. Heat the oil in a pan on medium heat and after a minute or so, add the mushrooms.
  4. Fry the mushrooms for a few minutes until brown both sides.
  5. Add the chinese five spice, maple syrup, soy sauce, hoisin sauce and mix.
  6. Allow the sauce to reduce and thicken slightly, this should take a couple of minutes.
  7. Add the seasame seeds and coriander and mix.
  8. Remove the buns from the packaging and follow the cooking instructions on the packet (at the time of writing this, it is one minute in the microwave).
  9. When the buns are warmed through, add the mushroom mix evenly to each of the buns.
  10. Sprinkle some carrot sticks on top and add the radish.
  11. Add more sesame seeds, coriander, radish and chopped chillies for garnish and extra kick!
  12. Enjoy these steamed buns as either a starter or a main, you won’t be disappointed!
