In the space of a few years, veganism has shed its hippyish image and entered the mainstream, thanks to mounting evidence for the benefits of a plant-based diet and a string of high profile advocates – from Bill Clinton to Beyoncé to clean-eating gurus such as‘Deliciously’ Ella Mills – crediting the regimen for their newfound health and enviably slim waistline. Half a million Brits are now said to follow a vegan diet – avoiding all animal-based products including meat, fish and dairy – and the number of vegan products launched in the UK grew by 134 per cent between 2012 and 2015.
