Major vegan awards crown Co-op doughnuts as the best accidentally vegan product of 2018.
The Vegan Food UK Awards are the largest vegan awards in the UK, where people get 24 hours to vote on their favourite vegan foods. This year there were 75 different accidentally vegan products to vote on within this category.
30,000 votes were cast overall, and over six thousand votes were cast just in the Vegan Food UK Awards ‘Accidentally Vegan’ Category. The Co-op jam & custard doughnuts beat Bisto gravy and JusRol pastry to the top spot.
What does ‘accidentally vegan’ mean?
It’s not unusual for a supermarket or company to not label a product vegan because of allergen concerns.
‘Accidentally vegan’ means that all the ingredients are vegan friendly, but cannot be labelled vegan.
Co-founder of Vegan Food UK, Liam Day, said: “This is a real win for Co-op, their doughnuts have been pleasing vegans for some years now.”
He continued: “We believe this is now a perfect opportunity for Co-op to create more wonderful vegan products for vegans as evidentally there’s a huge demand for it.”
