Oxfordshire council rule Vegan only meals for future formal banquets.

Liberal Democrats and The Green party have ruled to serve only vegan meals at future banquets and formal dinners for the Oxfordshire council. The change came after the Green party chancellor promoted the environmental impacts of eating meat.

The change will be for the six formal meals each year for chancellors and others. It’s believed that Oxfordshire will be the first county council to make a plant-based change like this.

Ian Middleton, The chancellor who proposed this change, said, ‘We should be embracing the opportunity to set an example and send the message out. It’s a pretty modest sacrifice for the sake of future generations. Councillors who don’t want to eat it don’t have to eat in the council chamber.’

Other chancellors had opposing views, saying, ‘For the council to actually force all catering to become plant-based is wrong.’

Another commenting ‘The Conservative opposition believes veganism is a choice that should be respected, but it is not something that should be rammed down the throats of vegetarians and meat-eaters.’
