hospitals to serve more vegan food

The Vegan Society celebrate one of the first triumphs in their campaign to get healthy vegan food on menus in the public services.

It’s a step in the right direction as East Lancashire Trust reveal their new extensive vegan menu which will be served to patients & staff at their hospitals.

Trust leads the way

In the near future, hospitals within the Trust will be serving healthy vegan meals, including bean burgers, quinoa with stir-fried veg, roasted cauliflower salad, falafel with aubergines and a nut & cranberry salad.

Tim Radcliff, catering manager for ELHT, said: “We are continually improving the food experience for everyone who uses our facilities, and for some time we have been working on enhancing our provisions for vegans.”

In the past the Trust have been commneded & awarded for reducing meat consumption at canteens and for serving freshly prepared in-house meals.

The catering service at the hospitals even take part in Meat-Free Mondays where they have also cut out fish & cheese to be more accomodating to vegans.

Catering for Everyone’ is the name of the campaign that was launched by The Vegan Society with an aim to get all public sector services to serve tasty & nutritious vegan food, whether it be a prison, school, hospital, university or workplace.

Dominika Piasecka, spokesperson for The Vegan Society said: “Veganism is protected under human rights and equality law, meaning vegans have the right to suitable, animal-free catering in public sector settings.”

The campaign supports the rights of vegans but the charity also hopes that non-vegans will also be encouraged to eat the nutritious meals that will be available.
