Sainsbury’s wins award for the most vegan-friendly supermarket.
Over 30,000 votes were cast in total with almost 4000 people voted in this category alone, making it the largest awards of its kind in the UK.
The supermarket giant beat Tesco, the previous winners for this title, by almost 500 votes.
Members of the largest UK vegan Facebook group had just 24 hours to vote on their favourite supermarkets, with 23 to choose from.
A year of triumph for Sainsbury’s
Out of all the supermarkets, Sainsbury’s probably have had the most consistent year with launching new vegan food products.
Earlier in the year Sainsbury’s wowed vegans with the Shroomdog. As the name suggests, it’s a plant-based sausage made of mushrooms, which is now regarded as the most popular sausage amongst vegans.
The own brand range by Sainsbury’s, Love Your Veg, had other favourites including the Sweet Potato Katsu Curry.
Sainsbury’s continued their succes by selling Naturli products, a Scandinavian company that specialises in vegan meats, burgers and butter.
To top the year off, Sainsbury’s became one of the first supermarkets to sell the chilled & frozen Fry’s range. The range includes pies, pastries and vegan meats.
Top 5 Winners in order
Interestingly, The Vegan Kind Supermarket made its way into the top 10, as they sell a wide variety of vegan foods. We look forward to seeing more vegan businesses develop and grow in popularity in 2019.
