University Hospitals of Derby and Burton provide a fully separate vegan menu for their stay-in patients – are we seeing an insight of what is to come for all hospitals in the near future?
We recently caught a glimpse of a vegan food menu that is available at Royal Derby Hospital for patients that stay in overnight – and it really impressed us!

The menu is extensive and there’s not one falafel or pulled jackfruit dish in sight. Also on-site at the Royal Derby Hospital, there’s an M&S store with several vegan options, a Subway and several Costa Coffee’s, which we know are both good for our vegan-friendly alternatives.
Veganism now comes under the international human rights provisions and vegans in the UK are protected under human rights and equality law, which means in theory vegans cannot be discriminated against due to their lifestyle or dietary choices, which could be a reason for the change in hospital foods.
There’s a whole Facebook group dedicated to Vegan Hospital Food Hits and Misses too so it’s great to see this hospital, in particular, moving in the right direction.
