Waitrose launch a Christmas No Lobster Marie Rose Roll and we give it a go!

When we first heard about the Waitrose Vegan Lobster Roll we knew we needed to try it as soon as it was available in stores. With it also being a UK supermarket first too and the flavours sound great we went on a special mission to track one down.

I went to my local Waitrose store and couldn’t see this anywhere! I asked at the customer services counter and they checked and I was told that there should be 6 rolls in that store, and here starts the ‘Mystery Of The Missing Vegan Rolls’… about 3 members of staff helped to find them and they eventually appeared in the café fridges as one of the staff members thought it was a ‘café only’ sandwich.

I brought it home and dug in and also made a short video of the roll which we shared on Vegan Food UK Instagram page, you can see it here:

All in all, it’s a good sandwich, perfect if you’re on the go and the oyster mushrooms add a really nice texture to the roll. I’m not sure how similar the mushrooms are to lobster however, but the addition of the sundried tomatoes and the cucumber are great. The brioche roll was pleasant but I might have preferred this if it was a crusty roll. What do you think?

Whether this will be an out-of-season sandwich or just for Christmas we are unsure but it’s always great to see UK supermarkets bringing out unique offerings. There’s only so many ‘No Turkey’ sandwiches you can try without wondering what other vegan sandwiches companies can make.

Have you tried this? What were your thoughts? What other vegan Christmas Sandwiches do we need to try? And what shall brands make next?
