Earthling Ed and a Vegan Prawn

Brighton has its first all-vegan Fish & Chip Shop, selling plant-based haddock, cod, prawns, and calamari

We arrived at the central-Brighton located No Catch restaurant shortly before 2 pm on a gloriously sunny Saturday. Following the queue, we found it wrapped three-quarters of the way around the block, in the shadow of the West Pier.

As 2 pm came around, one of the servers excitedly came onto the street to encourage everyone to count down from 5 to celebrate the opening time. Then the throng stepped on in, with the first 100 being lucky enough to receive a free portion of their signature ‘cod’ and chips.

Entering the basement-level shop, the decor is simple and clean: white walls and tables, lots of plants, and a neon sign with the motto ‘The Future is Vegan‘.

An electronic menu reveals their extensive range: chip shop classics and delicious desserts. We were given a box of ‘cod’ and chips to tuck into first. The chunky skin on the fries were exactly what you want them to be – crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The ‘cod’ is perfect: light and melty batter, with seaweed adding the fishy flavour and the soy-based fish having a fantastically flaky texture. Accompanied with a fresh slice of lemon and a creamy, tangy tartare.

Next up we got our teeth into the meaty jumbo prawns. Finding it hard to decide between dipping them into the garlic mayo or enjoying them alone, they lasted mere moments. Light, crispy and juicy delights!

With the restaurant still heaving and the queue still growing, we left it there, but already can’t wait to order everything else. A Brighton must visit.
